According to Us Weekly, Rihanna has declined an offer to head the Super Bowl LIII halftime show amid the Colin Kaepernick controversy and the NFL’s handling of players who choose to kneel during the national anthem.

“The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta,” a source told Us Weekly. “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.”

Kaepernick has famously kneeled during the pre-game national anthem in protest of police brutality against Black people. Kaepernick is currently in a legal battle against the league, making a case that team owners have conspired to keep him from being signed because of him flexing his First Amendment rights. The case has moved forward, as decided upon by an arbitrator, which signals that there has been sufficient evidence provided by Kaepernick that justifies his claim.

As for the Super Bowl, the offer for the 30-year-old singer and Fenty Beauty pioneer reportedly went to Maroon 5, who is currently slated as the headliner. Cardi B may perform alongside the band as a guest performer, Sporting News reports.

Regardless, the NFL’s aversion to the right to protest voided them of the opportunity to possibly debut any new music from RiRi.
