The first trailer for Nate Parker’s Newborn, starring David Oyelowo and Olivia Washington, finds Oyelowo in a psychological state of torment.
The trailer shows Oyelowo’s character, Chris Newborn, and his family (Olivia Washington and Aiden Stoxx) going somewhere for a nice family escape. But the trauma Chris underwent while enduring seven years of solitary confinement isn’t something you can easily escape. From what the trailer illustrates, it seems like Chris’s past continues to live in his mind and haunts him, even in his new reality. It also stars Barry Pepper and Jimmie Fails
The film is part of a distribution deal between AMC and the film’s producers, Mansa Studios, which was founded by Parker, and Yoruba Saxon, founded by Oyelowo. Both Parker and Oyelowo feel that the AMC deal will put Newborn “on the biggest stage possible,” according to their prior statements.
As we previously reported, the film seems like a big move for Parker to return to the limelight after promoting his 2016 film, The Birth of a Nation. In 1999, Parker and his friend Jean Celestin were accused of sexually assaulting a fellow Penn State University student. Parker was acquitted at trial in 2001, while Celestin was convicted, though that conviction was later overturned on appeal. Parker denied any wrongdoing. The woman who accused them died by suicide years later.
