Karmelo Anthony, the 19-year-old who was convicted for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet, has been denied a new trial. While Anthony argued that his trial was unfair, the court evidently did not agree with his arguments.

A Texas judge made the ruling against Anthony this week, but did not provide specific details about the decision, CNN reported. Anthony’s attorney, Russell Wilson, said his client will still appeal the decision.

“Our commitment to our client has not changed,” Wilson said, per CNN. “We will continue to advocate vigorously on his behalf through every lawful avenue available.”

However, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis praised the court for denying the motion for a new trial.

“The jury’s guilty verdict stands, and we remain confident in the process. Every defendant has the right to appeal, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the Metcalf family in the painful wake of last week’s hearing,” Willis said.

As Anthony demanded a new trial, his attorney said the trial judge was unfair as he strictly limited transparency with the public. The attorney also said judge John Roach spoke with a Dallas TV reporter, saying the jury “got it right.”

Roach said the court only applied rules that were necessary to ensure a fair trial.

According to Howard, Metcalf wrote the N-word and derogatory phrases such as “Kill all Black people.” and “Heil Hitler.” The attorney added that Metcalf has been in trouble several times for getting into fights.

Anthony’s team argued throughout the trial that their client was defending himself when he stabbed Metcalf. Jurors, however, rejected that argument. Now, Anthony’s team plans to file yet another appeal to make a case for the 19-year-old.
